As part of the project Capitalisation of traffic models in the Adriatic-Ionian network to support the development EUSAIR - CAPTAIN, Sarajevo Economic Region Development Agency SERDA organized info day technical workshop where they presented the project activities with a special focus on the port of Ploce, its importance for Bosnia-Herzegovina and the connection port with Corridor 5c.
Although the Croatian port of Ploce port is of great importance for the economy of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It stretches over 230 hectares, with 8 terminals to accept all types of cargo. Categorized as a universal port purposes and serves for handling almost all types of cargo that appear in international maritime transport. The total annual handling capacity of the port of Ploce is estimated at 4.8 million tons of bulk and general cargo, while the total storage capacity of 600,000 tons of liquid cargo. The largest turnover in the port achieved Bosnia and Herzegovina with 91.35%. The construction of new port terminals for handling containers and bulk cargo port of Ploce will become the preferred port, not only for traditionally present burdens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also other neighboring countries.
For the Port of Ploce is said that the door Corridor 5c corridor that is part of a pan-European network of transport corridors. Construction of motorway road traffic Corridor 5c, and the waterway Bosanski Samac-Vukovar port of Ploce will significantly increase traffic in the importance of combined transport by the Danube countries, said among other things representative of the Ministry of Communications and Transport of Bosnia and Herzegovina Mladen Goluža.U context of geo-strategic importance of the corridor, a key the importance of belonging to the port of Ploce by road and railway communications associated with its natural catchment area - Bosnia and Herzegovina - and revitalizing character, which she belonged. This of course, requires attaching significant attention to strengthening the port and its transhipment and storage capacities, because with a strong port of Ploce Corridor 5c would not be interesting only bosanskoherceogva?kim and Slavonian businesses, but to attract the flow of goods and people to the Central European market, said Goluža .
The Free Zone Port of Ploce are located Petroleum Terminals of the Federation Ltd. Plates, occupying an area of approximately 15 hectares. Total current utilization of the storage area is approx. 80000 m? and storage of goods from containers annually about 400 000 mT. According to CEO Joseph Tomic Terminals Ltd. Plates expandable storage capacity for oil products, as well as for other media (vegetable oils, acids, gas). Reconstruction of existing tanks is possible to increase the storage capacity of up to 20,000 m?. Tomic has emphasized the need for linking the terminal in Ploce and terminals in the Federation of FBiH Railways (system "ship-train-delivery of") which would contribute to a further reduction of prices of petroleum products on the BiH market for end users, but also reduce the burden on main roads truck tanks, reducing environmental pollution, increase traffic safety, especially during the tourist season.

On 20th October representatives of the Serda and the Port of Bar had a technical meeting in Ploce with Port Authority of Ploce.
The meeting has been useful for the activities foreseen in WP3 of CAPTAIN project, as a matter of fact SERDA is in charge of Analysis of Port of Ploce and Port of Bar of the Capitalization of ADRIMOB outputs.
To boost further the growth of maritime economy the EU invests in a Blue Growth strategy that supports sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors: aquaculture, ocean energy, coastal tourism, marine biotechnology, seabed mining.
To maintain prosperity on European seas and oceans all the member states have to keep them safe, secure and clean.
To respond together to the global challenges that affect the security of people, activities and assets in the global maritime domain, the European Council adopted the Maritime Security Strategy (EUMSS) for the global maritime domain. It is a joint EU plan built upon closer collaboration within the EU, across the regional and national levels. It seeks to increase awareness and ensure higher efficiency of operations. At the same time it promotes cooperation with third countries and regional organisations in order to enhance their capacities in the field.
The plan involves many diverse partners, from the local to the international level, thus ensuring safer seas for everyone. One of the main objective is to protect EU maritime interests worldwide. By working together more closely and planning ahead, the EU and its Member States can make better use of existing resources, and enter more effective and credible international partnerships.
The EUMSS is complemented with an Action Plan, a list of over 130 specific actions, organised around five key areas of cooperation, and a timeframe to drive the implementation of the EUMSS forward.
European territory depend on safe, secure and clean seas and oceans for prosperity and peace. It is through adequate maritime security that the rule of law can be maintained in areas beyond national jurisdiction and the EU strategic maritime interests can be protected.
Also World Maritime Day celebrated on the 29/09/2016 has been an important occasion to raise awareness of the importance of the maritime field.
With 50% of the EU population living in coastal regions, the maritime economy is of crucial importance for the EU economy as it represents 5.4 million jobs and generates more than €500 billion per year.
Furthermore, 40% of EU internal commerce is seaborne, The EU is a world leader in maritime transport as 30 % of world vessels and over 42% of the value of seaborne trade is managed by EU ship-owners, 90% of the global offshore wind capacity is installed in European waters and half of the world's wave and tidal energy companies are based in Europe, Coastal and maritime tourism employs 3.2 million people, generating a total of € 183 billion (over one third of the maritime economy).

CAPTAIN Final Conference will be held in Trieste Wednesday, November 16th from 9.30 until 14.00
Venue: Hotel NH Trieste, Corso Cavour 7
Agenda and details will be available soon!
The European Commission published on the 3rdOctober, a mid-term report on the implementation of its European Maritime Transport Strategy until 2018. The report describes actions undertaken in various areas of the Maritime sector: from safety and security, digitalisation, environmental sustainability and decarbonisation. In each of these areas the report explains the next steps, how to improve and develop the policies already in progress; presents the actions taken at European and international level on passenger ship safety, the work in progress to put in place an EU maritime single window and the efforts to curb the greenhouse gas emissions of international shipping and implement sustainable development.
Maritime transport is widely recognised as the most environmentally sustainable and energy efficient way of moving large quantities of cargo, but the need for a cleaner shipping has come into focus, considering the new goals that States set themselves.
The report also highlights the necessity of dialogue and mutual cooperation between the stakeholders and administrations and focuses on the importance of international cooperation, of which the project Captain is a concrete demonstration.
International cooperation can permit simplification of administrative formalities for shipping and maritime carriage of goods, facilitation of international maritime transport of passenger and improvement of the infrastructures that lead to the development of tourism. Besides this the cooperation allows the collection of data, and the spread of best practices, the finding of common solutions and harmonization of procedures between Eu and non – Eu countries.
Taking into consideration the challenging economic circumstances the sector faces today and the fierce global competition, the report also highlights the importance of the digital innovation to promote competitiveness.
With this report the Commission also announces the launch of a comprehensive evaluation exercise of EU maritime legislation to ascertain whether this remains fit for purpose or adjustments have to be made within any of the five focus areas described.
